Femza

Fall 2018 - Spring 2019

Femza is an app designed to support women's safety, facilitate social connections, and track workout statistics.

This project was completed my Junior year of high school for a DECA project.

Purpose

I created Femza my Junior year of high school for both my marketing class and my DECA project. The assignment was to create a feasible startup that solved a problem. DECA participants took their projects to the state competition. All Marketing II class members presented their business and results to a school-wide Shark Tank competition with local professionals on the judging panel.

Accomplishments

  • Competed in North Dakota State DECA Competition

  • Won Red River High School Shark Tank

  • Competed in Greener Grand Forks Challenge hosted by the University of North Dakota and won a $5,000 Research and Development grant, alongside a mentorship program

  • Competed in Grand Forks Shark Tank

  • Competed in numerous quick pitch and pitch prep competitions hosted by UND Innovation Center

PR Crisis

A unit in our Marketing II class was Public Relations. My partner and I chose to use our app to respond to a PR crisis. Each team was assigned a crisis specific to their start-up; our crisis was that someone was attacked while using our app. Click below to see the response and risk reduction plan.

Assignment Deliverables

  • Create a feasible start-up

  • Create a prototype

  • Survey the target market to gain insight into the market's interest

  • Draft a business/marketing plan

  • Create a presentation demonstrating the business functions and business plans

Femza was the project that got me interested in marketing and entrepreneurship. I was awarded many opportunities to create freely, present, and develop my ideas. I created the app prototype with BuildFire, and though it was not fully functional, it gave me a competitive advantage because I had a tangible prototype to compete against other startups. I loved every part of this development process and found a deep passion for entrepreneurship and marketing. Though I had already been in marketing classes and DECA for two years, this project spurred my creative problem-solving approach to marketing and start-ups. It looks relatively elementary to me now, but was unequivocally the driver behind my passion.

Notes

My writing has thankfully developed since I was fifteen, but I was particularly fond of writing using the passive voice, so be prepared, should you choose to view my written business plan. Additionally, the email account I used to create all my marketing materials was deactivated and deleted when I graduated high school, so much of my writing and media is unfortunately gone. BuildFire was linked to my school email account, so I cannot link the app to the website, however, I included screenshots of the app prototype below. The app looks rudimentary in design now, but at the time it was my first time dabbling with web and app design. The concept and marketing plan were more significant than the design itself.
